Welcome

We are pleased to announce that the 9th International Workshop on the Biology of Fish Gametes will be held at the University of León, Spain on 15-18 July 2024.

This workshop, born in the context of a European research network, was first celebrated in Vodňany (Czech Republic) back in 2007, followed by Valencia (Spain), Budapest (Hungary), Faro (Portugal), Ancona (Italy), Vodňany (Czech Republic), Rennes (France), and the last event took place in Gdańsk (Poland) in 2022. The workshop has always been aimed at congregating research groups from all over the world, involved in the study of fish gametogenesis, gamete quality, development of reproductive biotechnologies, genetic resource banking, identification of biomarkers of reproductive performance, management of maturation and sterility, etc., with a special interest on unraveling the biological bases of the reproductive process and contributing to the improvement of reproduction in Aquaculture.

We are enthusiastically preparing the scientific and social program of the 9th IWBFG and are looking forward to meeting you all in León!.

9th International Workshop on the Biology of Fish Gametes

The 9thIWBFG is aimed at congregating research groups from all over the world, involved in the study of fish gametogenesis, gamete quality, development of reproductive biotechnologies, genetic resources banking, identification of biomarkers of reproductive performance, management of maturation and sterility, etc.

The workshop will be developed in a single session, allowing all the attendants to follow the plenary lectures, invited talks, oral communications or poster sessions, and to participate in the discussions in the warm and productive spirit that has always characterized the IWBFG.

INVITED SPEAKERS

Prof. Goro Yoshizaki

Dr. Goro Yoshizaki is the current director of the Institute for Reproductive Biotechnology for Aquatic Species (IRBAS) at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) (Japan). He completed his B.Sc. in Aquaculture from Tokyo University of Fisheries in 1988 and received his Ph. D. from the same university in 1993. His graduate research focused on the development of transgenic technology using rainbow trout. He later joined Texas Tech University in the United States as a postdoctoral fellow where his research focused on elucidating the mechanisms underlying oocyte maturation in fish, amphibians, and mammals. In 1995, Dr. Yoshizaki was appointed as an assistant professor at the Tokyo University of Fisheries. He then became a professor at TUMSAT in 2012 and the director of IRBAS in 2020.

To date, he has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and supervised 83 master’s and 21 Ph. D. students. In addition to his research on germ cell manipulation techniques, Dr. Yoshizaki is actively pursuing research on fatty acid metabolism in fish. Furthermore, he is the current president of the Japanese Society of Marine Biotechnology.

Prof. Oliana Carnevali

Dr. Oliana Carnevali is Full Professor of Developmental Biology at Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM, Italy). She completed her degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Camerino (UNICAM) in 1983 and received her PhD in Molecular Biology at the same university in 1989.

Her main research interests are aimed at the study of reproduction in different experimental models. This interest led her to the creation of three intertwined research pillars. The first one concerns the quality of gametes, from zebrafish to humans; an activity that has been developed within the framework of European projects or in collaboration with assisted fertilization centers. In recent years, her attention was mainly focused on Reproductive Toxicology (second pillar), in particular she has been involved in the study of reproductive disorders induced by environmental pollutants with hormones-like activities (EDCs). This scientific activity was supplemented by research efforts aimed at acquiring new knowledge on the concomitant metabolic disorders as response to contaminants in aquatic organisms, focusing on the molecular basis of such dysfunctions and on endocannabinoid system. As third pillar she has undertaken studies on the role of intestinal microflora in well-being of organisms, reproduction, metabolism, ossification process and very recently on the role of probiotic in the mitigation of EDCs toxicity.

She has published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and book chapters, in the majority of which she’s first author or corresponding author. She has participated in 170 national and international congresses and workshops. Her H-index from SCOPUS is equal to 59 and the sum of the citations is equal to 16075 (8th January 2024).

She is Vice President of the International Society Fish Endocrinology (ISFE) (2020).

Prof. Francesc Piferrer

Dr. Francesc Piferrer is Research Professor at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, where he serves as deputy-director of knowledge transfer. He has worked on fish sex determination/differentiation, fish sexual systems and in developmental and environmental epigenetics. He is the author of over 160 publications that have been cited more than 13,000 times (h-index 63; Google Scholar) and has co-edited the books “Sex Control in Aquaculture” and “Epigenetics in Aquaculture” (Wiley). He is currently involved in the development of epigenetic biomarkers for application to aquaculture, fisheries and conservation biology. In 2013 he received the Jacumar prize for best research in aquaculture. In 2019 he became member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, and in 2020 he received the College of Biologists award for research on fish reproduction and epigenetics.

Guide for Authors

The deadline for abstract submission is 31st May 2024.

When submitting your abstracts, the preferred scientific session must be selected as well as whether you prefer oral or poster communication.

Abstracts must be in English and should NOT include tables or figures.

Use a single space, margins 2,5 cm, Calibri font size 12 pt. The length should not exceed one page A4.

Oral Presentations:

Oral communication will last 15 minutes (strictly enforced), during which the authors will introduce their work and present their results. After each presentation 5 min will be reserved for discussion.

Communications from students will be evaluated by the scientific committee that will award the prize for the best oral communication.

Authors should bring their presentations on a USB memory stick in .ppt, .pdf or .key format.

Poster Presentations:

A0 format (Height 120 cm, width 90 cm).

Posters should be hung by July 16th of July and should not be removed before the lunch break on Thursday.

During the poster sessions, the presented works will be evaluated by the scientific committee and the selected authors will give a short presentation (3min /3 slides each) in the Flash Talks session scheduled for Thursday.

Among them, the prize for the best poster will be awarded.

The Congress will take place entirely in the Paraninfo of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of León (Spain). León is a city with a rich history and significant monuments.
