- Programa formativo en centro universitario de prestigio, próximo a Londres, en un entorno joven y dinámico. A continuación se detalla información sobre el proyecto: The laboratory maintains a variety of protist species (e.g. Paramecium caudatum, Euglena viridis, etc) both in axenic conditions and in artificial microcosms. ancestral cultures of Paramecium caudatum will be split into subcultures and left to adatp for about 20 generations (a few days, depending on temperature) under constant temperatures and oxygen levels, with standardised nutrient conditions and light cycles. The overall aim of this project is to investigate how environmental temperature and oxygen availability independently influence paramecium evolution in terms of size and metabolic rate as individuals adapt to the specifics of their thermal environment. The main role of the student will be to quantify the effects of adaptation on paramecium body size, swimming behaviour and metabolic rate. Body size and swimming behaviour will be measured directly from image analysis and video tracking of videos recorded under the microscope. Metabolic rate will be measured indirectly from the rate of oxygen consumption (also measured under controlled temperature conditions).
